Gunlock Reservoir, West Mtn. and
Virgin River 04/26 & 04/27 2014
Hosted by: Mike and Lynn Ardoin
Tail gunner: Sue Vargas
Only four people for this two day ride- Mike & Lynn Ardoin, Guadalupe & Sue Vargas. One Wildcat SXS and two Can Am Outlander 1000 ATV’s. Saturday morning was cloudy, breezy and cool. It rained most of Friday night and the ground soaked most of it up- very little mud and no dust. Our little group was able to keep up higher speeds and cover a lot of ground Saturday so we decided to combine the West Mtn ride with Gunlock Reservoir all in one day. Halfway up the mountain we reached the fresh snow line and were socked in with the snow clouds. By the time we reached the top, we had only 30 to 50 feet visibility. It was very surreal. It was also very cold so after a few pictures we headed back down into the valley where it was a little warmer. The trails were a mixture of slow crawling, twisting sand trails and high speed hard pack. We had lunch on the shoreline of Gunlock Reservoir with very picturesque views of the surrounding valley.
After lunch, it sprinkled lightly for about 15 minutes and then stopped. We had a spirited 30 mile romp to get back to camp. 94 miles today and we were tired.
After a 30 minute downpour, we all shared a broccoli & cheese casserole and grilled ribeye steak. After a nice camp fire we all crashed out.
Sunday morning we woke up to sunshine and a light breeze. After going through a gate with a large herd of cattle mooing at us in unison, we rode up to some ridge lines overlooking the Virgin Gorge. Then we worked our way down to the Virgin River where we had a nice break on the sandy shoreline. On our way back to camp we saw some great views of Snow Canyon State Park with all the red mountains, and Zion Park in the distance. Then back to camp and head home. 45 miles today.
Overall, a great weekend and a lot of great riding!
